Completed ballots must be received by the Board Secretary no later than the close of the Public Hearing scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Azalea Hall, at 1620 Pickett Road, McKinleyville, CA 95519.

Important Voting Information

Measure B was originally passed by voters 30 years ago, in 1993, and was reauthorized in 2011 at the same rate. It is a local assessment to help fund McKinleyville park and facility services. Measure B funded construction and maintenance of Azalea Hall at Pierson Park, McKinleyville Activity Center at Pierson Park, and Hiller Sports Complex.

On September 6, 2023, The McKinleyville CSD Board unanimously approved a Resolution to renew Measure B and increase the assessment to: 

• Maintain the facility housing the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office in McKinleyville;
• Provide services to keep park restrooms open and clean;
• Keep the Senior Center open and maintained;
• Maintain ballfields, playfields, and playgrounds in all parks;
• Maintain facilities such as: the McKinleyville branch of the Humboldt County Library, Azalea Hall, the Teen and Community Center, and the Activity Center.

The proposed assessment would renew Measure B, our locally controlled funding that the State cannot take away, at the $94 rate per year (less than $8 a month) with cost-of-living adjustments until ended by voters.

Q:    Who gets a vote?
A:    The Measure B Assessment is voted on only by McKinleyville property owners. The assessment is calculated based on a District evaluation of community service needs, the revenue needed to address those needs, and an allocation that reflects the benefit provided to each property. If approved by voters, the updated assessment will provide $700,000 dollars annually, with independent citizens’ oversight and annual audits. 

Q:    How do I vote?
A:    If you are a property owner in McKinleyville, you should have received your official ballot in the mail. If you didn’t receive a ballot, or you think there’s been a mistake in the ballot you received, you can call Michael Medve, Assessment Engineer, at (951) 587-3500 or by email: mmedve@willdan.com to get a ballot.

Q:    Is my vote a secret?
A:    Ballots will not be opened or tabulated before the close of the public input portion of the hearing on November 1, 2023. During and after the tabulation, the assessment ballots and the information used to determine the weight of each ballot shall be treated as disclosable public records, as defined in [Gov. Code] Section 6252.

Q:    Will there be a process to apply for an exemption?
A:    Following the hearing on November 1, 2023, if a majority of property owners have approved the Measure B update, then at the next Board meeting on December 6, 2023, the Board will consider the application process for low-income, disabled, and senior property owners to apply for an exemption.
